Lee Kuan Yew Biography

LKY was born on the 16th of September, 1923 to a Chinese family. Lee delved into politics and acquired more languages other than his first and primary language, English.

According to Britannica, he learnt Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. This was a smart move as these four languages are the four most spoken languages in Singapore today.

For his education, Lee briefly attended the London School of Economics before transferring to Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge where he graduated with double starred honors in law. He was active in legal sector until 1959.

A young Lee fought against the British colonial rule. However, through a national referendum Malaysia achieved independence in 1963. Singapore later separated two years later. From there on, it went on to become one of the most developed nations in the whole of Asia.

He became the Prime Minster of Singapore in 1959 and stepped down in 1990.  Goh Chok Tong became the Prime Minister after LKY stepped down and he (Le Kuan Yew) served as Senior Minister under his successor until 2004.
